Should Qwak scroll?

Postby Jamie on Wed Dec 10, 2008 12:11 am

I mean, a lot more than what the GBA version does for example (which only scrolls a tiny bit) ...

I was thinking of having much larger levels, with more of a puzzle element to them, more tricks and traps etc. Or is better as a single screen game?

Not sure I agree with you there! I think there's a lot of room for improvement ...

One thing I find with the game, is that the action doesn't last long enough, before you get the status screens poping up (between levels). Maybe it would be better to prolong the action, minimize use of status screens (or do away with them altogether - instead there could be on screen bonuses as you play - mind you it is a bit cramped as is). Scrolling levels would allow more scope for puzzles and secret areas on levels. So it'd be more like an adventure (think Gauntlet). Also, I really like the idea of having special secret rooms, you can only get in to if you collect extra special keys. I've also given some thought to extending the puzzle solving aspect of the game (not so much action, but thinking and doing things in a certain order etc).

There's a lot more I have in mind ...

I like the current single-screen gameplay and don't think that element should change, but perhaps if you wanted to include scrolling levels you could include another 'adventure mode' for that purpose? Or maybe you could mix-in some scrolling levels as a compromise? I'd love to have both rather than losing the single screen gameplay altogether.

Yes and no!

No if you are sticking with the current style of Qwak and you are porting to other platforms. It works and it should be left as it is.

Why the yes?

If you are going to write Qwak on an existing platform again, then, yes, scrolling should be included and the game play should move on but the Qwak brand name should be kept with a new game title.

Cool! Some interesting ideas there, thanks guys.

Future versions of Qwak, may include scrolling levels, with more puzzles, tricks, traps and secrets to discover. I'd also thought about introducing a feature where all the level is blacked out, and you have to explore the level, before sections of it will light up ... this kind of thing (I think) would work a lot better on bigger, scrolling levels.

The appeal of the game is that each level is beautifuly designed and easy (for the most part) to understand and see the best route to completion. Every age can play and success in winning a level is down to simple logic and dexterity with speed and reaction time. Luck plays its part, but generally the player makes his own luck.

Having a scrolling screen on a standard PC would just annoy me, and although I might enjoy a scrolling game with the same characters and similar challenges, I don't think you should change the original platform structure of Qwak to scrolling without risking the very soul of the game.

+1
Please make Qwak 2 if you would like to change the core gameplay! :)

was just watching the GBA video and thought scroller with large levels would be pretty cool. I think it should be a separate game though, maybe call it Quak Adventure.
